They are the 'good' kind of Japanese eraser, not the knockoff Chinese kind. Hey I'd Didn't even know there was such a difference, but there is. This is definitely the most over engineered eraser i have found so far. The dark blue is firm gripping vinyl strip to hang onto while you apply pressure, the white strip is the obligatory eraser surface, which rotates into the upper section to reveal the now fashionable 2 hole sharpener. and all for 1.99. such a deal. and it doubles as a hokey puck.

I had forgotten about these. They were sent as a present from Gunther Schmidt in Germany. The envelope was sitting unopened under a pile of stuff I hadn't gotten to. They are labeled "Fun Collection" Art Nr. 10-29-988. www.brunnen.com. From what I can find out Brunnen probably buys them and repackages them. Not bad little hard vinyl erasers...but seriously guys these are too cute to use.

Dear Joy of Erasers:

I upgraded from a Staedtler to a Sakura, which was much more powerful, but in about three months it tore itself apart. So I've just bitten the bullet and gotten the Koh-I-Noor. I got it home, charged it, and tried it out.

I was astounded at how loud it is. Granted, my other two were much smaller, but I'm finding it hard to believe that this is normal. It's louder than my cordless drill! Is this just how the model is? Or did I get one that is defective?

I know it's hard to describe sound and loudness is a relative property, but the character of the sound is very different from that of the Sakura. The Sakura made a soft whine. The Koh-I-Noor has a "clicky" sound like an old movie projector. Any idea if this is right?

Interesting little device, the sharpener has a flip open shaving compartment. The eraser of course is of the hard vinyl type used in 'shaped' erasers, but the carabiner is nifty.

the 'erasers' are just little stubs of vinyl, that fit in a holder with a loop for a keychain. the holder is also filled with lava lamp material. I guess while you are sitting in class you can stare at it.

I like the idea of an eraser as accessory, however the little lanyard is attached to the frail plastic wrapper and not the actual eraser. I'd loose it in a minute....wait I wonder if i can drill a hole in it?

Normally I draw the line at pencils, especially Mechanical ones, sorry Dave. But I saw this today and thought this was terribly clever
Sakura came out with 3 diameters of SumoGrip mechanical pencil (which I kinda like because the barrel and grip are not skinny) but they went even further and improved on the typical mechanical pencil eraser. This one when pressed advances the lead, but when twisted, it advances the eraser!. Granted for $3.00 American you get a very complicatedly designed pencil which may be overkill. But at least someone is TRYING to address the inherent problem with tiny erasers on reusable pencils.

ALL these visitors and no one told me about the image typo. sheesh.

Stephen over at PencilTalk is doing the stuff I should be doing, so check it out.
He ran a head to head competition between erasers.

I find most erasers adequate to the task of erasing pencil from paper, a few are hideous and a few superlative.

But I should be offering more than my personal opinions and present actual TESTS and results.
Personally I felt overwhelmed at the NUMBER of erasers to test.

I will try to come up with something clever.

It is marginally better than NOT having a stick eraser.
You can erase one letter at time providing that letter is written in soft pencil on smooth paper or you can get some large red rubber bands and use them as projectiles.

I am shocked to find a rubber ink eraser available in the US with some actual GRIT to it. Since Sanford messed around with the recipe for their Union and removed all the silica, it has been nearly impossible to find an ink eraser in the US that has any abrasiveness.

This one actually is rough where it should rough, granted smooth and fine papers wouldn't come out well in a contest but for use on thicker papers and cardboards, would be be quite useful.

the regular plastic is about midway between a Staedtler Mars and a Magic Rub, a nice all purpose eraser. The Extra soft has a bit more squishiness, less smudging, more friction.

The "softer" is actually their soap eraser in a reasonable rectangle instead of the rounded ergonomic shape. I don't know how folks get erasing done without corners.

A reader sent this in to me, apparently it can be found at certain Walmart stores, but it doesn't appear anywhere on the internet that anyone can find.

I will call Papermate tomorrow and find out the scoop.

I will also give it, its own post.
It feels much smoother and harder than the Papermate White Pearl. Where the white pearl in texure and function could easily pass for a white- "Pink Pearl" the Black Pearl has a slicker surface and has less friction.

Found it. It is a new product introduced in January 2008. retails for 2.25USD My vendor is going to order me some, and I will vend it on Sicpress.com

I cannot even get pentel USA to return my calls.
Pentel UK however was most apologetic and sent me refills.
it does erase ink, but the working surface is about 2 cm wide, so it works best one letter at time. I can see why the calligraphers go crazy for them. You can scrape out all those loose serifs!

A white plastic eraser with holes in it. I can't read Japanese, but from what I can guess is that the holes create an irregular erasing surface and hence increase the abrasion against the surface.

This is a sticker eraser, with a very very tiny surface. and if you eject the eraser cartridge you will find it is really only about 3 inches long. However it is insanely useful for removing graphite and such from an area the size of a hang nail.

I have no idea what the blue thing does. It does go in and out. Perhaps it is for ink, thought it doesn't seem to have any texture variance.
The only thing I can read is the website - www.sun-star-st.jp
where the seem to be VERY excited about the part that goes in and out. Perhaps it is for more precise erasing once the corners are worn away.

I actually LIKE this one. about 1 ½" long it's quite small and cute. I would liken it to the General's TriTip as far as fitting snuggly in hand. However it has no corners, so it isn't as precised.

On the other hand, it feels sooo much like a worry stone that if i had it in my pocket, I'd probably enjoy playing with it when I wasn't using it.

KUM-TRI01 Correct Eraser - Sharpener

This triangle shaped vinyl eraser, is attached to a pencil sharpener, it seems superior to the ergonomic shaped Eraser/Sharpener as it has corners and can be directed.

I finally got mine in the mail today from Pencil Things.com The eraser is opaque firm vinyl. But I really like the size and I am a sucker for triangular erasers.

Who knew this was a new fad, Baumgarten's seems to be a general supplier of school and janitorial supplies, so not doubt this comes from a general manufacturer and may turn up with a generic name.

This kinda reminds me of the fat crayons we had as children. form the Kum website: "High quality eraser, ergonomic grip zone, precision point for accurate erasing, Elegant design, Quality material that prevent smearing, assorted colours."

I'd like to get a hold of some as well as their Correct-Cap, which fits over a pencil TIP, as a protector, which is actually kinda ingenious.

i always thought color indicated function, as it does with Staedtler, but alas i have not found any of the black vinyl erasers to be any different than than the white.
I opened all the Hwarang 'jumbo' dust free and the white, yellow and black have the same texture, and are a little on the soft side.

this is basically part of a soap eraser fit into a handle that contains sharpener. It would be good for an artist that erases large swaths, but for directed erasing it is a little awkward.

Sharpenable rubber ink eraser encased in wooden pencil. I have tried using it but perhaps i use too much torque. I find I am forever sharpening them. I sent a couple to a dealer who had some postage stamps where someone had written on the back of each one in ink. I hope they worked for him, as i think that was a perfect application for this eraser.

Pelikan BR-40 Pencil /Ink eraser

The Pelikan BR-40 is a rubber ink/pencil erasers, that is exactly like the Faber 7070-40. One suspects they are all made in the same plant and printed with the stationers name.

It is a full rubber eraser, the blue part has embedded silica grit for ink erasing. The white is a racing stripe to make the eraser go faster. Well, it is just more eraser just white. If it were another material, the eraser would tend to split, as the rubber wouldn't adhere well to another material.
